NAVY LEAGUE
NEW PLYMOUTH BRANCH. A preliminary meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Nan League, convened by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne), was held yesterday afternoon in the Borough Council Chambers to decide upon what action the New Plymouth people will take in the proposal by the women of the Dominion to present an Ensign and Union Jack to the battleship New Zealand. The attendance was not as large as might have been expected. Mr. Browne '•addressed those present on the laudahleness of the undertaking, and subsequently the following resolutions were passed: —That those present form themselves into a committee, with power to add to their numebr, for the purpose of assisting in the proposal: that Mrs. 0. W. Browne (Mayoress) be appointed president of the committee; that Miss D. B. Mills be asked to act as hon. secretary and treasurer of the committee pro tern; that the president (Mrs. Browne!, Mesdames Sandford «nd Crant and the hon. secretary be appointed an executive committee, with power to arrange for collectors and conduct general details in connection with assisting the proposal. The question of surplus funds was discussed, and the meeting decided that a letter be sent to the Tiiiiaru centre, suegesting thai any surplus collected should be refunded to' the local branch of the Navy League, pro rata in proportion to the. amount subscribed by the centre. ■ An adjourned meeting will be held at the Council Chambers on Fridav. 12th inst.
