THE THREAT TO STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchureh, Monday. At a. meeting of the Tramway Board to-day, a motion was proposed inviting the Tramway Employees' Union to send a deputation to the Board to discuss the alleged grievances of the employees. The chairman and other members took up the attitude that the union's threat to strike should be withdrawn before any further conferences took place, and it was decided to write to the union suggesting that their letter containing the threat to strike should b'e withdrawn, with the view to opening the way to holding an amicable conference.
XEW SORT OF FIRE LADDER. I Auckland, July 1. A valuable acquisition to Auckland's fire-fighting plant, in the shape of an electric telescopic turn-table ladder, has arrived from London, and is now being fitted up for commission. The ladder is the first of its kind in New Zealand. The only other in Australasia is in Sydney. It has a reach of 87 feet, and has three extensions. The electric driving gear is 80 horse-power, and has a capacity of 18 miles an hour.
