THE TIMBER WORKER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. Mr. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, informed a Post reporter to-day that in connection with the demands of the timber yards and sawmill workers, the employers, after hearing the other side, had come to the conclusion that they could not accede to conditions other than those already set out in the present | award, the reason being the enormous i expense of running the timber industry. The dispute will go to the Arbitration Court.
CUSTOMS REVENUE. Wellington, Monday. The Customs Tevenue and beer duty collected at Wellington during the past six months were:— Customs,°£42s,9ls; beer duty, £6346.
A MURDEROUS ASSAULT. Auckland, Monday. Previous to the Maheno's departure from Sydney for Auckland, a trimmer on the vpssel had a quarrel with the assistant butcher. He went to his quarters, and was returning with a razor, when lie encountered W. Norman, a,n exemployee of the Union Company, and, evidently mistaking him for the butcher, slashed his face from below the ear to beneath the jaw. causing terrible injuries. His assailant was arrested, and Norman was conveyed to the hospital.
A MISSING MAORI.' Hamilton, Monday. Kaute, a well-known Maori, disappeared from his home at Punui recently. It is believed he fell into the stream, which 'was flooded. It has been searched, but no trace of the missing man has been found, Kaute was one of the survivors lof the Oralcau defence.
