The Canterbury Rugby Union's competition advanced another stage to-day in very inclement weather, which prevented anything in the way of brilliant football. *The principal senior game— Sydenham v. I Despite the usual wintry conditions J all matches at Wanganui on Saturday were fast and open. The leading Rugby teams, Pirates and Kaierau, put up a ding-dong battle from start to finish. Both sides let loose nippy passing runs, but tire defence was fairly sound, and at half-time . the score read three all. Phiates had all the luck to the final heat and punctured Kaierau's defence on two occasions. Goal-kicking is an unknown quantity in these parts, not one , of many easy shots finding the uprights, and the Game ended Pirates 9, Kaierau 3. Warerley forfeited to Wanganui. The sensation of tt.be junior grade was the defeat of College (which recently beat Te Aute at Palmerston North) at 'the hands of Kaierau—ll points to 8. !The League game, played in the slush of Cook's Gardens, was looked upon a* a cake-walk for St. Johns, but, thanks ) mainly to Captain Siddells, Eastern made j the champions bite the dust—or rather, ithe mud. St. Johns set a hot pace and penned Eastern down for a considerable spell, but eventually the latter, cleared, and getting- within striking distance Siddells quickly kicked two fine goals. St. Johns took the lead with ?. converted {try, but Siddells dashed through and scored and goaled. and a forward scoring again, Siddells added the major points, making; Eastern 14 points to St. Johns 5 at half-time. Both teams slowed down in the second spell, but Eastern broke through once, Siddells converting, and St. tfohns suffered their first defeat for the season by 19 points to 5.
