That the question of electrical ship propulsion is becoming of more than passing interest was evidenced during the interesting discussion on Mr. Orde's paper read before tho North-east Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders at Newcastle, England, when no fewer i than three members referred to the fact that they had here a very efficient means of producing the necessary thrust for propulsion purposes when using high revolution and high temperature primemovers such as turbines and internalcombustion engines. Comnw.nder Glenny, on behalf of Eramett, of America, brought forward the details of the 7000-h.p.. electrically driven ship which ,the American Government are now fitting up for trials. The vessel is designed for 14 knots, and will be ready for trial in about twelve months' time She will use saturated steam at 1901b pressure. TJie cost oi the plant is 56d01. per shaft horse-power and the guaranteed steam consumption which is estimated to be much lower ir j practice, is 11.51b of steam per shaft ! horse-power. The total weight of the j plant is 156 tons, whereas the weight o! | a reciprocating engine set of the sanit ) power and revolutions would be 280 tons I A full power reverse is provided. It is j rumored in Newcastle that a vessel is be | ing built for Canadian owners in whicl j electrical power is to be used for pro j pulsion. This ship, it is stated, wil be of GOO-h.p. ■ It is further reportei r that a powerful company has been form I edto equip vessels with electrical powe J for propulsion purposes.
