The term of office of Mr. Palliser, acting High Commissioner, has been extended for a month. A London cablegram states that Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema will be buried in St. Paul's Cathedral.

Constable O'Neill is at present relieving at Inglewood, during ,the absence of Constable Fitzgibbon, who is on holiday leave.

Mr. R. Crawshaw, of the New Plymouth Post Office staff, left yesterday for Wellington to attend the Postal Conference.

At its meeting yesterday the Taranaßi County Council carried a resolution of sympathy with Mrs. R. A. Gray in connection with the death of her husband, who was Government auditor for Taranaki.

Out of -fifty-three applicants, the Inglewood Borough Council, after about seven hours' deliberation, has selected Mr. Henry Scott, of Christchurch, as electrical engineer in charge of the borough electric light and power department.

At a public meeting in Nelson last niglit, at which representatives of practically every denomination were present, it was decided to present a piece of plate to the Right Rev. Dr. Mules on the occasion of his retirement from the Bishopric of Nelson.

Miss Buckman will leave New Plymouth on Friday evening by the Rarawa tor Auckland, on route to* Svdney, for which city she sails on Monday. After giving a concert Miss Buckman" will sail tor London by the Otvvav, leavinc Svdney on July 20. "

Thlr t.y-two applications from various parts of the Dominion were considered by the TAnaki County Council yesterday for the position of road and'bridge inspector. After deliberating for fullv an hour the Council appointed Mr. R. W. Bond of New. Plymouth, to the position. Mr Bond at present holds the position of bridge foreman to the Council, and Jias also had considerable experience as a building contractor. The appointment carries with it a salary of e?s<) per annum. Mr. Bond will take up his new duties on August 1 '
