TEACHERS' INSTITUTE

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COMMISSION. The executive of the Teachers' Institute met on Saturday morning, when it was decided to forward the following resolutions to the Education Commission next /week:- ! (1) That probationers be appointed for three years; that they teach five hpurs a day, and that their salaries be conaiderably increased. (2) That it be legal to appoint male assistants to grade four schools. (3) That a Dominion scale of salaries for inspectors be institute^. (4)' That the number of boards be reduced to four for the Dominion, and that there be some uniform system of promotion of teachers. (5) That there bo more continuity between primary, secondary and university work, and that there be a definite syllabus for secondary schools. (6) That all (work at technical schools during, -primary school hours be postponed until the pupils have passed the sixth standard.! (7) That instead of the present grant for free books there be . substituted a grant for writing and drawing materials and for school stationery. (8) That no deduction be made from the salaries of teachers under 21 years of Hgt who have gained teachers' certificates, provided they have done the necessary training. (!)) 'That the syllabus be made more definite with respect to English, and that the arithmetic be more evenly distributed throughout the standards. (10) That where there is a group of small country schools connected by passable roads several of those schools should be closed and -the scholars conveyed to one central school. (11) That owing to the more exacting nature of teachers' work as compared with other branches of the public service, the salaries at present are inadequate, and in consequence the profession is not sufficiently attractive. It was decided to ask Mr. Tryer, headmaster of the Stratford High School, to act as the representative of the Taranalci Institute at Wanganui, where he ! will introduce the proposals to the commission.
