Grand National Huiy'.e Race. Suly 13.—V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.) ,' Gisborne races on Thursday. Sir Solo has been turned out for a Si ell. Stevens pulled up lame after racing at Eastings. The money came for St. Toney on Thursday, but the good thing missed. Continuance is coming down in the iV'.-ights, and may be given a chance in the Grand National. Since running second to Continuance in the National Hurdles last year, The' Rover 'has not contested a stick event, hut it is on the cards that the horse will prove dangerous at Irentham and at Eiccarton shortly. Kilosteri was the rank outsider of the irttecn horses contesting the chief flat handicap at Napier Park on Wednesday, and returned a great dividend. The dogs were barking Serenity on •Wednesday, and many alleged Bar Vons would not handle the hot stuff. As usual, it was the case of punting in haste and repenting at leisure. Serenity is" good goods, and was unlucky to lose. Latest English advices give the riding figures of the leading horsemen, Wootton and Maher, as 28 and 26 firsts respectively. Silver Blaze and Master Paul are reported to be jumping big country at Riecarton in fine style. Amongst the hurdlers White Cockade is fencing proficiently. At COO guineas Paisano must be accounted fairly well sold. The horse's recent form does not suggest that his new owneT, Mr. G. P. Andrew, of Gisborne. will quickly get his money back. Bollin was produced at Napier Park on Thursday, and put up an attractive performance in beating Waterworks and Black Northern in the Poraite Hurdles. Good hurdlers are scarce this season, and the Hawke's Bay horse may be worth keeping in mind. Hoanga is back again at Ellerslie, and has been fired and turned out until the spring. This reads like a record. At Burdeker (Queensland) recently, odds-on favorites ran off with every race on the programme. Just imagine the odd's merchant wailing, "Oh. what a day!" Black Northern is running into form, I and his owner states that all going well I the horse will contest hurdle races at Trentham, and will probably have a shot *t the GraTid National Steeplechase later on. The proposed Australian trip is off. A good word is spoken for Mr. E. J. Watt's yearling Jason (Achilles —Stepina). The youngster moves nicely, and easily beats his companions in short flutters. The colt will probably be taken to Sydney in the spring. The ex-New Zoalamler. Sea Dog, who
fell for the last time in the Wanda Steeplechase the other clay, was at one time trained at Riccarton. He was 1 twelve years old. and was by Castashore < Some scribes put his breeding ' down as by Lancaster —Merrinaw, but the latter is not correct. Sea Dog won ' a few races on the other side, and was engaged in the big (steeplechases at ffemington and Caulfield. Captain Jingle came out of his shell on Wednesday when he paid a good price hi the Xapier Steeplechase. On form he should run forward at Gisborne next week. Under expert veterinary care Antarc-j. tic appears to have thrown off his rheumatic lameness, and Trainer J. Peaehey now has the big horse doing strong work at Wanganui. The Grand National Steeplechase is said to be the neddy's dart. Sea King has been tried over the email sticks,- arid shapes well for a beginner. A lot of good money went astray on Wednesday when Prosper was left at the post in the Hack Handicap. The Advance horse cantered behind the field all the way. Quite the sensation of the week was the stealing of Soultoria from PukeJioiie. Provided the thieves get a«iy clear with her, it would he hard to disguise such a finely-built mare, and to attempt to smuggle her out of t'h'j 'colony would not be safe for many months. Since Mr. Roulston's death all his horses have been on the private sale list, pnd a big crowd of alleged buyers i have been up to see the team. Whether I on'i of them took a fancy to Sc.iitoria and thought he knew of a Mti-.r way of steuring her than by parting "ith the coin will probably be known shortly. Tyrannic was the only favorite to scoic en Wednesday, and even jn« victory was somewhat of a flukp. 'One report states that had Wirihana not broken down when he had the race ;n hand, followers of the favorites would have had a blank day. Winners wc-j !iard to pick at both Hastings and "the Park,'' and the improvement made by several neddies between the two meetings was almost so remarkable as to call loudly for help, or for a horde of stipendiary stewards, or the police! Jockey A. Julian broke his collar-bone when Quandary fell with him at Napier. Idealism lost the Ahuriri Hurdles at Xapier through indifferent handling. The rider of Elfish timed his run nicely, and caught the Karamu horseman napping. Ceylon proved herself a really good mare hy the way she finished under punishment in the Settlers' Handicap. With a good run Serenity and Prosper would piobably have beaten her, but the runner- Diavolo, is a good sort, and pushed her all the way up the straight.
