THE STAR OF CANADA
PUMPING GOING ON. By Telegraph—Press Association.' Gisborne, Yesterday. The trial of pumping is proceeding aboard the Star of Canada-, and great volumes of water are flowing from the scuppers. The'diver who inspected the vessel from outside yesterday found the forepart of the vessel had worked fully eight feet into the papa, where it vested as in a cradle. He was unable to approach closely, owing to the vessel's movement* and the light was bad, but he could find no structural damage. The rise and fall of the tide inside the vessel yesterday was three feet, as against six feet outside. Captain Hart states that the pumping test has been in every way satisfactory. Forty minutes' pumping last night reduced the water in No. 2 hold by two feet, and in No. 1 by two feet nine inches. One hour's pumping to-day reduced the water four feet, and the second hour proved that the pumps were more than able to keep the water down. The Terawhiti's pumps have not been used", that vessel being engaged in laying the anchors. Captain Hart stated that as far as the diver could ascertain the vessel was perfectly sound structurally. In the engine-room an angle-plate between the. frame and a tank had started, but this had no serious consequence. There was no sign of a leak, the engine and boiler room compartments remaining quite dry. Tn fact, if the ship was cut off at the bow, the. after part could float off intact. The rumor that the machinery was displaced was unfounded.
