< From our Resident Reporter. A VALUELESS CHEQUE. A "GENTLEMAN" MAKES A HAUL. In the S.M. Court yesterday there was another of those eases of carelessness in cashing cheques. In this ease Frank Rhodes, a publican, sued Alfred George for £9 ss, the amount which had been obtained by George from Rhodes' barmaid by presenting a cheque signed "A. Buckland." The cheque had evidently •been forged, and the police 'have been [advised. The defendant's story was that i lie had cashed the cheque for another man, whom he more often referred to in his evidence as "the other gentleman," and that the "gentleman"'left for Eltham with the money. He considered it very hard that he should have to pay for another man's roguery. | His Worship: You handled thischeque, and you tried to get it cashed.' Of course, you must pay Mr. Rhodes back, and get it from the man. Mr. Spence: The girl would not have cashed this cheque for the other man, 1 but she knew tihis man. His Worship: Yes; defendant guar--anteed this cheque to be good. . Defendant: I never guaranteed it. He : was there all the time. \ His Worship explained that the fact of the defendant having presented the cheque was giving a guarantee td the, barmaid of its being a genuine one. "It's the old tale," he said. "Cheques were never intended to V accepted between any but business people, and as a matter of convenience. I notice of late that there has been a lot of trouble caused through accepting cheques from '■ strangers. People should not accept' a cheque from a person they do not know. Defendant: But I did' know this gentleman. Judgment was given for plaintiff for' £9 SS; and costs £1 IGs. EDUCATION BOARD ELECTION. Mr. R.
