Stratford News

I From our Resident Reporter. THE POULTRY SHOW. Congratulations to the promoters of tile Stratford Poultry Show on the excellent entries received in all sections of the show. A very satisfying fact is that there are to be birds competing from all pajrts of the Dominion. In the White and Barred Rocks, the championship classes, no fewer than twenty-nine breeders will submit birds to the judge, who will have a busy time. The South Island will be represented in various sections. The general public are interested in these shows, and should support them, for it is only by the encouragement of fanciers that the best breeds are developed. The Stratford Society is devoting much attention to utility classes, and the man who finds it impossible to get eggs in winter should compare his barndoor fowls with the fine specimens to be shown. The judges in the baby section will have to deal with between twenty and thirty babies. The prizes in this section are liberal, and in all departments special prizes are numerous. There are fair entries in the root crop competitions. The show will be held on next Thursday and Friday, and promises to be well attended. An enthusiastic committee, with a most energetic secretary, is in charge of the arraagements. COMMERCIAL. T. LAMASON'S REPORT. Last Saturday I held my usual weekly s'ale, when a very good entry of all sorts came forward. I'quote as follows: Hens, Is to 2s Gd; culled pullets, Is 6d to 2s; cockerels, small, Is 3d; ducks, 2s; carrots, 3s per sack; cauliflower, 2s 6d to 3s per doz.; cabbage, Is to,. 2s per doz; furniture, etc., at usual rates. Three traps were sold during the week at very satisfactory prices. . ..

STRAY PARAGRAPHS. Spectators at Thursday's match -were prevented from freezing by the tropical language of a party of visitors. Their betting and cursing went on unchecked by one or two club delegates and an exmember of the Taranaki Rugby Union management committee, who were in the vicinity. The expressions used by one man were sufficient to cause him to be warned off all football grounds for life.

Mr. F. Spurdle remarked las£ night that nothing would persuade 'him to act again as referee in a match under the conditions prevailing yesterday. He had the worst of the job of the whole l thirtyone muddy, dripping men who raced about in the driving rain for the delecta tion of the people in the grandstand. Mr. Spurdle is deserving of' thanks for "facing the music" on such a day.

The Stratford Football Club 'is now in the lead for the northern division championship. It is hoped the men will now start to train. "There's one more river to-cross," and. it's as well to be prepared. Some members of the team don't go near the practice ground at all. If the captain takes a firm hand they Inay improve. It is the general, opinion 'that if the Stratford men can be got to train they will give Waimate a hot time when the clubs meet to decide the provincial championship, and they may with ordinary luck land the cup. .Isn't this worth training for? Stratford beat Skinner Road, cribbage players at. Skinner road on Wednesday night by 54 games to - 41. . The visitors were hospitably entertained. Messrs. R. Dingle, A. B. Osmond,'J. H. Thompson and W. H. H. Young 'are nominated for the two vacancies on the Borough Council. ■

"Billy" Kersan's minstrels paraded Broadway yesterday in scarlet uniforms, and the band played some fine selections in front of the County Hotel.t.

The strains of "Auld Lang Syne" in the vicinity of Regan street on Wednesday night suggested a farewell of'some kind. Inquiries revealed that the members of St. Andrew's Tennis Club had been holding a social in order to present the championship trophy to Miss E. Brayshaw. Mr. H. W. Douglas was entrusted with the presentation, ahd Miss 0. Brayshaw thanked the members on ■her sister's ljehalf. The musical programme consisted of songs by Miss Marcia Mackay and Messrs. Douglas, Ternpier, Anderson, W. V. Wilson,' Hale, and P. Thomson. Mrs. McNeely and Mrs. ■Thomson played the accompaniments. Mr. Patrick contributed a Recitation.

The report of the burglary in South Taranaki is making people here? believe that there is some truth in'the highwaymen's stories, There's no doubt of 'it whatever. :
