THE PALMERSTON CARNIVAL
FOWLS AND FOOTBALL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. At the second day of the National Dairy Show there was a fine attendance, stated at 15,000, being 2000 more than on the second day last year. During tke college football match in the afternoon the stands were crowded and people were massed many deep all round the oval. They came from all over the Dominion. Al the same time the different halls were crowded. The Romney Marsh breeders held their annual meeting, and at the National Dairy Association conference papers were read by Mr. Jas. Burgess (chairman of the Warea Dairy Company) giving remarkable figures as to the result of herd testing as practised by him; by Mr. Reakes, on "Science and i\» Farmer"; and by Mr. Cuddie on dairy matters. To-night the Ayrshire Breeders' Association met. The chief feature of to-day's exhibition was the opening of the Manawatu Poultry Association's show, which included the New Zealand Poultry Association's championships in Orpingtons. There was a very heavy entry. Mr. G. N. Bell, late manager for Lancock and Co., of Lancashire, who was judging, considers that some of the White Rocks, Leghorns, and Black Orpingtons shown are equal to anything that could be shown in the Old Country, and another competent judge considered that the | White Orpingtons were as fine as it was possible to imagine the breed. Mr. Bell considers that the colonial birds shown here are better in feather and bloom than the English birds, which he attributes to the climate of New Zealand being more suitable to poultry than that of Great Britain.
The Orpington champion winners were: Black cock, Mrs. Sowman; hen, A. E. Stonex; cockerel, W. T. Hicksi; pullet, Hicks; buff cock, E. Hodgson: hen, C, P. Armstrong; cockerel, J. Gordon; pullet, Armstrong; white cock, A. E. Stonex; hen, E. S. Young; cockerel, A. E. Stonex; pullet, A. E. Stonex. The Rugby football match between Wanganui College and Te Aute College caused intense excitement. Wanganui won both the senior and junior games after brilliant matches, each side having now won an equal number of matches in the juniors, and Wanganui being one to the good in the seniors. In the junior match McLean and Bryce scored for Wanganui in the first spell, Davidson converting Bryce's try. In the second spell Carr scored for Wanganui, Davidson again converting, and Harding also got a try. Te Aute got one try, the total being 16 points to 3. The senior match was a very brilliant affair. Wanganui had the "advantage of the first spell especially, through surer handling and taking. Faber scored early for Wanganui and then Humphries. Faber kicking a goal. McAndrew next scored for Te Aute, Tatare kicking a goal. Faber scored again and converted, the spell finishing 13 points to 6. In fcf/li.e" second spell Te Aute attacked almost incessantly to the last few minutes. Rawhiti and Niu got tries, bringing the score to 13 to 11, amidst great excitement. The game was intensely fast, with only four minutes to go Wanganui scored one more try, the game finishing 16 points to 11, after some of the most brilliant football ever seen here.
