CYCLING
CIRCULAR ROAD RACE. Matters look particularly bright for the second annual road race to be held on the Taranaki circular track around Mt. Egmont, and there is every possibility of the race proving more successful than the inaugural race last year. In addition to many who competed last year, inquiries have been received re the race from Australia, Whangarei, Poverty Bay, Wanganui, and other parts of New Zealand, so that there should be a record entry, and given fine weather it will undoubtedly prove the event of the year. Keen interest is also being taken in Uw event, and subscriptions in cash and kind are coming forward well. At a committee meeting held last night there was an attendance of about twenty, Mr. J. William presiding. A most optimistic feeling prevailed through out.
The Eontertainment Committee, whc ] have already put in good work, reported' that the entertainment at Fitzroy had resulted in a profit of £6. Arrangements are also in hand for an entertainment at Bell Block, for a euchre party in ] New Plymouth, and also one at South ' road. The Royal Pictures had also ] offered to give half the proceeds of a special picture evening, and the Taranaki Garrison Band had promised to assist. It was resolved to write and thank the Royal Pictures and the Gar-1 rison Band for their generous offers. < The secretary reported that the Dun- ] lop Company had donated a gold medal ', valued at £5 ss. Reynolds and Co., Inglis Bros., and Clarkson and Co. had each donated bicycles, and Ealing and Co. a set of tyres, whilst the Britannia - Tyre Co. had donated £ls 15s cash. j Messrs. Weston and Williams reported that they had circularised the professional men of the town, and so far had received donations amounting to £4 4s. It was also reported that other donations to the extent of £6 had been re' ceived.
Some discussion ensued as to the date of the race, and it was pointed out that September 5 was the only suitable date free from representative football matches. This day was accordingly decided on, subject to the executive beting able to arrange with the Hunt Club, who had fixed on that day for their annual race meeting. It was also resolved that the executive draw up the prize list, which will be on the same liberal scale as last year. It was resolved that the route be the same as last year, save that the finish shall be from Inglewood via the Junction road to the Racecourse, instead of via the Mountain road to the Recreation Grounds, provided the use of the racecourse can be obtained from the Jockey Club. The executive was also authorised to interview the Jockey Club on the subject. If the race finishes on the Racecourse it is probable that a motor cycle race will be included on the programme.
