Aus-! tralia, the weather was hot and stormy, j with alight showers in the morning, the'. Lords ground fortunately escaping the , severe downpour which fell elsewhere j in London. There were four thousand spectators. MacLaren, Mayne, Minnett and Web- j ster were omitted from the Australian team, and Jessop from the English j team. j England won the toss, and went to the , I wickets. Hobbs and Rhodes opened to , Whitty and Hazlitt. Hobbs took the i first ball from Whitty and hit it for a' single to short-leg. It was almost a chance of running Rhodes out, as Bardsley returned it smartly. Rhodes made a' cut for four off the third ball and a < single off the fourth, and Hobbs a three, on the on-side from the fifth. Hobbs, got a single off Hazlitt and brought up the ten. There was a thunderstorm after the fifth ball, and a downpour which lasted fifteen minutes, followed by sunshine and showers. The pitch was pro- j tected. By this time the attendance had increased to seven thousand. There was no play till after lunch. When j play was resumed there were fourteen j thousand present, and the weather was j bright and the gro-nd drying. Hazlitt and Whitty began •; bowling, but Matthews relieved Whi.iy at 12, and Whitty relieved Hazlitt at 20. Hobbs had then made 17. At 14 he survived an appeal for stumping off Matthews. Rhodes at 21 was beaten by Whitty. He had made ten by smart running. Kelleway replaced Whitty at 38. 'Rhodes scored a dangerous two in the slips off his first ball. The 80 appeared in 40 minutes, and runs came steadily. Rhodes made 52 in 58 minutes, including eight fours. He made eleven in one over of Kelleway's, including two fours in the slips, the "first a very dangerous stroke. Hobbs made 25 in an hour and a quarter. The bowling was uneven. There were eighteen thousand spectators present when the game was again stopped owing to rain, with no wickets down for 77.
Play was recommenced at 4.30, Kelleway and Matthews bowling. The batsmen were shaping well. Hobbs, with a four and a two off Kelleway, hoisted the century in seventy-five minutes. Hazlitt replaced Matthews at 102. Ten runs later Rhodes was taken at the wickets off a rising ball. He had been in W minutes, and gave <a splendid display. His score included eight fours. Hobbs, who had made 53, had taken 80 minutes to score fifty. One for 112. Spooner filled the vacancy. He was not confident, and was beaten by a break back from Hazlitt, which went for four byes. Twice he was nearly caught, and he survived an appeal for leg-before. He was, however, cauglit shortly afterwards in playing forward. Hobbs 57. Two for .123. Fry then came in. Another good stand was effected, and runs continued to come. Emery replaced Kelleway, and when the score stood at 102 he nearly bowled Fry with his second ball, a teg break, which went for four byes. Macartney replaced Hazlitt at 166. The ball was occasionally rising. Hobbs' off stump was then uprooted by a tremendous leg break from Emery. The retiring batsman had grren a. brilliant display of driving and cutting, and his score included fifteen fours. His century took 160 minutes, and the 107 occupied 165 minutes. Fry had scored 16 in 55 minutes. Three for 197. Warner was next in. The second century took 117 minutes. Ten minutes later Warner played a ball from Emery on to his wicket. Fry was watchful, and did some good driving. Four for 211. Stumps were then drawn. Play bad occupied 180 minutes. The present test is Gregory's fiftieth, he baving visited England first in 1890.
