Stratford News

I From our Resident Reporter. [ ' THE COUNCIL ELECTIONS. FOUR CANDIDATES OFFERING. There are four candidates for the two vacancies on the Borough Council, namely, Messrs. R. Dingle, J. H. Thompson, W. H. H. Young, and E. A. Osmond. The first three are already nominated, and Mr. Osmond is definitely "out." There are two old councillors and two maiden runners in the field, and the election promises to be interesting. There may be more aspirants before the time for nominating closes on Thursday at noon. Who knows? THE STREET LIGHTING. AMICABLE AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT. • |

The special meeting of the Borough Council on Monday discussed \yhoie heaps of things. The street lighting was under review, the council considering the following letter from Mr. W, J. Newton, engineer and secretary of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company:—"l am instructed to confirm the verbal offer made by the company's chairman (Mr. R. Masters), and Messrs. Budge and Anderson at the conference yesterday with a committee from your council—namely, that the Stratford Electrical Supply Co., Ltd., will, for a term of three years from the first day of July, 1912, supply current to glow 32 candle-power filament (Tungsten) lamps of not exceeding 40 watts each for street lighting for. the &\m of £3 10s per lamp per annum. Lamps of large candle-power to be charged exactly in proportion. The, installing of carbon filament lamps will be a breach of agreement. If the above terms are acceptable to your, council will you kindly let my company know at the earliest possible moment. This offer does not include the supply of any lamps, lamp fittings, or accessories in connection with street lighting." Councillor Ward moved that the offer of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company be accepted, providing that the verbal offer made to the council that the service be an all-night one, be included in the agreement. After a little discussion, in which it was averred that the rise'in the price charged was due to the burgesses' refusal to municipalise the concern, the. motion, was passed unaltered. It may be retaliation, of course, but the directors would be more than human if they heeded not the . unkind things publicly said and written about them recently. The arrangement made is cheaper to the council than if the company insisted on fulfilment of the letter of the bond, which entitles them to charge'' public bodies at the rate of Od pwf unit for current consumed.
