Stratford Mews
From our Resident Ri'porkw. GENERAL NEWS Mr. E. Masters, chairman of the Stratford: Electrical Supply Co., interviewed to-day, said the offices to be erected for the company in Broadway north would be erected of fireproof materials. There will be a, show-room for the display of electrical goods, which the company now imports direct. Behind that will be the clerk's room, and the chief engineer's and secretarial office. Sunday was a ruinous day for church finances. Folks preferred the cosy fireside to the chilly church, and who could blame them? At least one of the churches, I understand, is making arrangements for heating the building. Who was it that remarked that it is impossible to convert a man when he has got cold feet? The snow on the mountain was chillingly close. Egmont was a glorious ' sight,! the ivh'itb mantle coming well, down on the foothills. The men working on the extension of the Waipuku railway are quite welcome to the jol}, •'
The Stratford branch of the Girls' Friendly Society is to be opened in the { Parish Hall to-night. The society bas done- a great deal of good in the various 1 centres of population, and there is no ' reason why the local branch, in the hands of a good organising committee, should not perform useful work here. It '-will take something of the form of a girls': club. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Fookes will regret to hear that Mrs. Fookes is ill in Auckland, and the trip undertaken for health reasons will therefore have to be curtailed. At latest advices the amateur highwayman was taking a rest. ' ■ "PaHiament" meets to-night at • the Egmont Club Rooms to debate the Prime Minister's Old Age Pensions Bill. The ground was white with snow on Sunday morning, when the average early riser got out of bed. "Stratford has acted quite up to its ] reputation," said Mr. Blascheck on Saturday night, at the conclusion of his entertainments. "It has established a record; it is the smallest audience we have had in New Zealand!" But if small, it was considerably appreciative—a fact which Mr. Blascheck acknowledged. It was a delightful entertainment. Mr. John Leydon, whose name is known nearly all over the Dominion, met with a painful accident at .the railway station on. Saturday evening. lie was walking towards the Toko train to deliver a parcel to a passenger, when he slipped over a roll of tarpaulin, which had been left lying on thq platform., While still unsteady 011 his legs,; lie tumbled across mother tarpaulin, find in the effort t.o recover himself, his ~ ltnee> a cap split.. I BERNARD'S PICTURES. • ! There -was an appreciative riuflienee laet night at His Majesty's Theatre,'and the stajr picture, "The O'Neill," ■was received iwitli great enthusiasm. Th.e enterprise of the management in ;seeiiring this fine succession of star pictures.'is commendable, and deserving of' the hearty support of the picture-loving public.
