Before the Education Commission, Bishop Nevill and Dean Fitchett urged that a referendum should be taken on the introduction of Bible-reading into the State schools on the New South Wales plan. THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Dunedin, Last Night. At the sitting of the Education Commission this morning Dean Fitchett appeared on behalf of the Bible in State Schools League, representing the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Primitive Methodist churches, comprising, according to the census, about 70 per cent, of the population. The object of the League was to secure a referendum on the question of introducing the New South Wales system of religious instruction into State State Schools. Bishop Neville, Primate of New Zealand, also gave evidence in support of the system. The Commission left by the second express for Christchurch.
