GENERAL TELEGRAM
LAND FOE SETTLEMENT, By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, Saturday. A recently-formed southern syndicate has speculated extensively in land north of Auckland. Within the past fortnight a Wellington syndicate purchased 57 square miles of land north of Russell. This will be sub-divided and offered for sale. Land settlement should be accelerated in Hawlce's Bay shortly. Four estates, comprising 3000 acres, have been inspectd by the Commissioner of Crown Lands and a member of the land board last week with a view to reporting to the Land Purchase Board next week. The estates are on the inland Patea road and consist of sheep and cattle country.
I THE DOMINION'S EXPORTS. Wellington, Saturday. Exports from the Dominion for the first half of this month show a big increase over the corresponding period ot last year, namely., £713,019, against £403,181. The effects of the late season on the volume of the production are strikingly shown in the figures for the year ending 15th inst., and those corresponding in the preceding twelve months. The exports for the year ending June 15, 1912, totalled £19,004,771, against £18,903,912, an increase of £100,859. A truer index of the volume of the year's exports is to take the year as ending in September. For instance, the exports for the year ending March 31 of this and last year show exports for this season to be at a considerable disadvantage. Exports for the year ending March 31, 1912, totalled £19,036,600, and for the year ending March 31, 191lj £21,543,900, or a decline in this season's figures of -£2,-507,240, whereas this season actually has been more prolific than the previous one.
