Melbourne, June 22. _ Mr. Fisher declared that after considering the request for assistance at the time of the Brisbane strike, the Government concluded that the circumstances made it unnecessary to send troops. By sending troops it would have done irreparable injury to Australia. "A conflict between troops and citizens at the present time would," said Mr. Fisher, "rend our defence system." SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. Sydney, June 22. The University has decided upon an award for scientific research. The •cholarships will not exceed £l5O per annum, and will be tenable for a year. NEW SOUTH WALES STOCK RETURNS, j Sydney, June 22. The New South Wales stock returns to the end of last year show a decrease of 29,000 sheep, increases of 34,897 horses, 1104 cattle, 37,257 pigs, compared with the previous year. Last year's butter production was 83,407.659 lbs., an increase of 6,782,8291b5.; the cheese produced was 5,290,655 lbs., an increase of 3,261,447 lbs. UNDERGROUND RAILWAY FOR SYDNEY. Sydney, June 22. A deputation from the City Council explained to Mr. Griffith the scheme for a tunnel and underground railway from Wooloomooloo to Sussex street. The Minister promised to refer the matter to Cabinet.
