OBITUARY

SIR JOHN LOGAN CAMPBELL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Sir John Logan Campbell, the father of Auckland, died peacefully in his sleep this morning, aged 95. Sir John Logan Campbell was born in Edinburgh in 1817, and was educated at Edinburgh University, becoming an M.D. and F.R.C.S. In Auckland he was principal of the firm of Brown and Campbell. He was a member of the first Provincial Council and Superintendent in 1855, and later represented Auckland in the House of Representatives. Sir John was a great benefactor to Auckland City. He supporte4 the School of Art for many years, and presented Cornwall Park, an area of 300 acres, .to the people. He was knighted in 1902. Christchurch, Last Night. The Minister of Internal Affairs has forwarded the following telegram to the Mayor of Auckland regarding the death of Sir John Logan Campbell: "Please accept, on behalf of the citizens of Auckland, my sincere sympathy over the death of Auckland's great patriot and benefactor, Sir John Logan Campbell. The Government has, in accordance with the late Sir John Logan Campbell's wish, and at the request of Sir Maurice O'Rorke, chairman of the One Tree Hill Domain Board, decided that his mortal remains shall be interred in the One Tree Hill Domain, and that special legislation will be introduced next session to validate this decision.—G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs."
