NEW STEAMSHIP SERVICES. OPENING OF PANAMA CANAL. The following was cabled to the Sydney Sun last week from Vancouver:— According to one of the officials, the Canadian-Australian Royal Mail Line may cease to- exist after the completion of the Panama Canal, the idea being to substitute a cargo service. The Union Line, it is stated, will inaugurate a mail line to New Zealand and Britain via Panama, which will be subsidised by the Governments of both countries, Vancouver will be dropped, and will be served by only the Canadian-Pacific vessels, transhipping at Colon. Color is lent to the statement by the fact that the Union Line are building several freighters, which are being fitted for the carriage of frozen produce. It is beMeved that these vessels will inaugurate the cargo service between New Zealand, Australia, Victoria (8.C.) and Vancouver, and take the place of the present steamers. A fast line will run between New Zealand and Great Britain by way of Panama, and ■will carry mails, passengers and freight for Vancouver and Victoria. The boats will call at Colon and connect with a special Canadian-Pacific service. The idea is to arrange the schedules to the advantage of the ships of both lines in order to provide an increased mail and passenger service.
