PERSONAL.
The appointment is anounced of the Hon. John Robert Sinclair, M.L.C., as New Zealand representative on the Imperial Trade Commission, in the place of Sir Joseph Ward, who resigned. Mr. Sinclair is at present in England. Mr. Robert Cleave, of InvereargUl, whoso death was reported early in the week, aged eighty years, arrived in Melbourne in the ship William in 1854, during the height of the Victorian gold fever. In 1802 Mr. Cleave came to New Zealand, and the next year commenced business as a nurseryman and seed merchant in Invercargill. About five years ago Mr. Cleave retired from business and confined his energies principally to his orchard at Avenal. Mr. H. W. Bishop, senior S.M. in Ohristchurch, in the course of an address at the East Belt Brotherhod yesterday afternoon, urged the Brotherhood to take militant action in connection with the increase of gambling and the abolition of the totalisator, and indicated tih*t he himself would take militant action in these and other matters near kis heart as soon as he was no longer a magistrate. He also hinted at the likelihood of his being a candidate for Parliament after severing his connection with the magistratcy.
