. From our Resident Reporter. LADIES' LEAP YEAR BALL. The tennis ladies' leap year ball was 'held in the Foresters' Hall on Thursday night, and the ladies who organised and Co7iducted it must certainly be highly complimented upon the whole arrangements. To start with, the hall was just well filled, and there was not the usual annoying preponderance of members of J one sex. Then the floor—it was perj feet. Some will say that it was imperfect, and that its imperfection lay in its treacherously smooth surface. Falls were not infrequent from this cause. A capital supper was provided, and Miss McDonald'* music was all that could be wished for. Miss Brayshaw, who was assisted by Miss Petrie, brought to the duties of M.O. a freshness and energy that might be emulated by some of the menfolk at similar functions. The ladies . seemed to enjoy hunting up partners for themselves, and everybody was jolly. After supper Mr. H. W. Douglas acted as M.C. The committee comprised Mrs. McXeely, Misses Morison, A. Read, 0. and E. Brayshaw, M. Mackey, A. Petrie, M. O'Leary and A. Worthington. FOOTBALL The farewell dinner to Mr. Harold Masters on Thursday evening passed off very successfully, when once it was started. The want of punctuality on the part of some of the footballers calls for comment. Operations commenced at nine o'clock, and the dainty dinner put on by Mr. and Mrs. Payton found appreciative appetites. In the few speeches made in ' proposing or responding to the toasts, the veterans, "Dan" Malone and "Mick" Harkness talked like fathers to the lad 3 on the necessity for training thoroughly, and pointed out that a man to shine on the football field must be fit. The way to get fit was to take up summer sport, j say swimming. The guest of the even- j ing was pointed to as an example of what solid summer training would do for them. Mr. "Joe" Preschner, wrestler, deplored the fact that youths, instead, of going in for healthy exercise in their spare time, loitered about billiard saloons. He reckoned that the lads of Stratford could easily be led into the right track. All that was needed was a leader. Some of fcke remarks of the two old footballers present I will send to the football editor. COURT PROCEEDINGS. Two undefended civil cases were decided in the S.M. Court yesterday. Fines were inflicted for cycling on a footpath s in the borough, and for driving horses I loose through the borough during pro- j hibited hours. i BERNARD'S PICTURES. J To-night is the last night when the j Stratford people will have the opportunity of seeing the great war drama series, [ "The Spartan Mother."* Another film » well worth seeing introduces us to the J herring fisheries at Yarmouth, and an-) other one that reeks of the briny is "The Champion Lady Swimmer," in which some clever diving is pictured. "Billy's Stratagem" and "Constable Smith in Trouble Again" were also favorites, whilst "Tweedledum's Football" would amuse even a football selector. Matinee this afternoon at 2.30.
