DUNEDIN SESSIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Dunedin Police Court this morning two railway shunters named J David Hannibel Waldie and John Little were charged separately with having stolen beer from casks on transit from Lawrence to Dunedin. It was shown that while the train stopped at Mosgiel for some time the accused, by means of a hose pipe and steam guage tubes, extracted from the hogsheads a considerable quantity of beer. It was mentioned that the shortage in one cask delivered to a hotel at Dunedin was twenty gallons. Chief Detective Herbert stated that Mosgiel had given the police much trouble for a long time, owing to thefts ifltl beer, butter, and other produce in season. Both accused were convicted, but in view of their excellent characters sentences were deferred for the probation officer's report. CHURCH LOAN REFUSED. Dunedin, Last Night. At a conference of the Church of England Men's Society in the Diocese of Dunedin to-night, the question of appointing a permanent organising secretary for New Zealand was discussed. A letter was read from the Rev. Gordon Saville, English general .secretary of the Church of England Men's Society, stating that it was intended to offer certain districts a loan of £IOO a year for three years to help towards securing a permanent organising secretary, the loan to be Tepaid on terms agreed on. After discussion, the desirability of having a permanent organising secretary was confirmed, but the meeting was strongly opposed to a loan, contending that the necessary money should be raised in the Dominion. A CRIMINAL ACT. Wellington, Friday. During the progress of the fire at Hataitai yesterday it was discovered that the fireplug had been cemented up. There were few plugs in the locality, and fifteen houseß depended on this plug. The authorities are endeavoring to discover the perpetrator of the criminal act. FARMERS AND AWARDS. Auckland, Friday.
