AN UNFOUNDED RUMOR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Nighti ■ Owing to some unfortunate miaunder-.'.. standing, a report gained currency to the effect that Mr. Robert Cleave had died. at Avonal this morning. Mr. Cleave lot dead. A PRISONER'S ESCAPE. V Invercargill, Last Night. Shortly after 1 o'clock to-day a pris- "j oner named Alexander Ferrer, who vu ■, one of a squad of men working liegj tjie'iS old baiths, attempted to escape. Ferrer ? dodged round the corner, and made off \ ( y up Tweed street. There were three of- ,« fi cers with the squad, and while one re-/.' 1 * mnined in charge the other two went i in pursuit. One mounted a bicycle, and the second enlisted the assistance of a " J spring van. Ferrer turned south into .'•« Liddell street, and when he saw that ho ' was being overtaken attempted to crawl •• under a building. He was observed, and , 'within iive minutes, of his escape wiw> • again in custody. At the last sittings of the Supreme Court in Invercargill Ferrer was sentenced to three years' reforms,- ■ ■ tory detention for attempted rape at - Riverton. lie was suspected of making 4 an attempt to escape within a few diya j, of entering the prison. In due course Ferrer will be charged before the Magia- ' trnte with attempting to escape from ii legal custody.
