Mr. E. Dockrill was yesterday appointed chairman of the New Plymouth High School Board, in place of Mr, N. K. MacDiarmid, who has resigned. Mr. H. Trimble, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, was yesterday authorised by the Hoard to give evidence .before the Education Commission at Wanganui. Miss Kennedy, diserict nurse at Uruti, has resigned, having accepted a position in Dunedin. It is probable that Miss Kelly, of Timaru, will be appointed to the vacancy. Mr. Cruickslianks, New Zealand representative for Messrs. Collctt and Co., who has been on a tour of the Old Country and Canada, returned to New Plymouth on Tuesday evening. Councillor John Smith, who has been a member of the Wellington City Council since 1885. and was Acting-Mayor during Mr. T. Wilford's absence throughillness, was yesterday presented by the Wellington citizens with a purse of sovereigns in recognition of his services. Mr. Wm. Swadling, J.P., died suddenly at his residence at Kaponga. Tie was planting a tree in the garden on Tuesday evening and was discovered dead, leaning on his spade, on Wednesday morning. Death was due to heart disease. Deceased had large interests in Kaponga. He was chairman of directors of the Kaponga Dairy Co., a director of the Moturoa freezing works; a councillor of the Eltham County Council, ft former chairman of the Kaponga Town Board, a member of the ITawera Charitable Aid Board, and a member of the New Plymouth Harbor Board. He was about 55 years of age, a widower, and leaves one child.
