Surrey, Whitty, Webster, MacLaren, and Minnett were omitted from the Australian team. Tho weather was threatening «,md <tke wicket soft. There was a moderate attendance. Bird won the toss and Surrey went to the wickets. Hayward and Hobbs opened to Hazlitt and Emery. Hayward batted for 55 minutes and was caught at mid-on. The 50 appeared in 65 minutes. Ten runs later Hobbs, while playing forward, was smartly stumped by Carkeek. Hayes and Ducat saw the century go up in 115 minutes. At the luncheon adjournment the score was two wickets for 110. Hayes had made 34. When he reached eight he was badly missed by Bardsley at point off Matthews. Ducat had scored 21 by watchful play J and good off driving. The bowling Avas wanting in length. On resuming play 3000 spectators were present. Emery and Hazlitt bowled, and in the latter's second over Ducat's
middle stump was uprooted. He had batted for 50 minutes. Hayes was legbefore in Emery's third over. Abel made a single and had his middle stump put down—Five for 135. The remaining five batsmen added 55 During the latter portion of the innings the wicket was faster Hitch, getting cut of his ground, was easily stumped. Strudwick played soundly and confidently. The innings lasted 210 r -utes. Kelleway and <k. uings opened the Australian innings, Hitch and Smith being the obwlers. From the last ball of the latter's second over Kelleway sent a skier and was caught. Macartney was caught at the wickets by Strudwick, standing back. Jennings and Bardsley were next associated, but rain stopped play at 5.15. Stumps were drawn at 6 o'clock. The following are the scores:— SURREY.— Innings.
