A LUCKY ESCAPE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Whangarei, Tuesday. A party of five left Limestone Island by launch on Sunday on a fishing trip outside the heads. When passing close to a small island in the Hen and Chickens group, the engine broke down and the launch was dashed on the rocks by the rough seas and totally wrecked. All the party managed to scramble ashore safely. Anxiety at their nonreturn caused the dispatch yesterday of a search launch, which rescued the shipwrecked men. A WHARF ACCIDENT. Wellington, Last Night. While cement was being discharged from the steamer Navua, at the Queen'* Wharf this afternoon, John Carr, em« ployed as a hatchman, was struck by a sling of cement, which knocked his head against an iron ladder. He is in the hospital suffering from fracture of the skull, and is in a serious condition.
