London, June 17. The distress of the dockers is acdte. Several pawnshops have closed, having a plethora of pledges. The Strike Committee visited Parliament, prepared to adopt any settlement agreeing to the payment of the average wages. | THE TRANSPORT WORKERS. GOVERNMENT OBDURATE. Received 18, 10.25 p.m. London, June 18. Mr. Askwith has written to Lord Devonport endeavoring to arrange terms for the transport workers to resume work. Lord Devonport replied, declining to > promise to meet representatives of the < men. If they resumej work he would willingly discuss any suggestions by the Government. THE LIGHTERMEN. POLICE PROTECTION. Received 18, 10.25 pjn. , London, June 18. The Foreman Lighterman's Society manned a dozen tugs and brought numbers of barges to the Tilbury, Victoria, Surrey and Commercial docks. The police guarded the barges. The Sailors and Firemen's Society has balloted against the strike.
