DISTRICT NEWS

TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent). A social and dance was held on June 13 to fare well Messrs. W. and H. Judd and their families, who are shortly leaving the district. The interior of the ■hall, which was prettily decorated for the occasion by members of the committee with drapery, punga ferns, and pampas, presented a very pleasing appearance, the only drawback being that its area was hardly sufficient to accommodate the large attendance. Instrumental and vocal items filled the first part of the evening, the following ladies and gentlemen . contributing to the programme: Pianoforte solo, Miss Laurence; song, Mr. Rudkin; song, Miss H. J. Jamieson; song, Mr. E. Hancock; song, Miss Gideon; duet, Mrs. Iludkin and Mrs. W. Judd; Highland fling, Mr. Ken Matheson; song, Mr. Dombroski; song, Mr. Russell. At the conclusion of the concert, Mr. Stephenson, who' occupied the chair, in the course of a short ■ speech said that he was not at all surprised to see the very large crowd assembled, as he knew the high 'esteem with: which Messrs Judd Bros, were regarded throughout' the dis-' trict. Although they could not be looked upon as ( old residents of the locality, during the, short time they had been, here they had made a great many friends, who very much regretted their impending departure. They had -not, only provpd themselves settlers of sterling quality, but had set a splendid example by the whole-hearted way they had always given their services in matters concerning the; public welfare and entertainment. On behalf of the assembled company, he wished them every happiness and prosperity in their new home, and concluded by calling for three cheers for the-guests of the evening, which were given with great enthusiasm. Mr. W. Judd, who was evidently much affected, said that he could not find words to express how much he appreciated the kindness of the Tariki people in tendering them such a splendid farewell social. He very much admired the beautiful way the hall had been decorated, and shpuld always remember the i very pleasant time he had spent that evening, (Applause.) Mr. H. H. Judd, who was hoisted shoulder high on to the stage, expressed his inability to make a speech (an assertion which was received with cries of dissent). He could only say he was very, sorry to leave Tariki, where he had spent many happy days. He fully endorsed his brother's remarks about the appearance of the hall, and with him heartily thanked the Tariki people for their kindness -and good wishes for the future. After the disposal of an excellent supper, dancing was soon in full swing, and 1 the "wee .sma' hours" were reached before a hearty rendering of "Auld Lang Ryne" concluded a very successful and enjoyable evening. The ladies' committee—Mesdames Hancock, Jones, Rudkin, Esson, Speedy, Stratford and Stephenson, and Misses. Walker and Long—worked hard, and are to he congratulated on the success attending their efforts. Amongst the gentlemen who also rendered valuable aid to the committee Mr. J. Masley was, perhaps, the most conspicuous. Mr. Bennett provided the music and Mr. H. J. Stratford acted as M.C.
