THE STRIKE IN BRITAIN
THE NATIONAL STRIKE. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. London, June 18. The Strike Committee has repudiated the statement made in a letter by Father Hopkins, trustee of the Seamen's and Firemen's Union, that the vote of this union would prevent a national strike. The -ommittee asserts that Father Hopkins is not a real trade unionist, and passed a resolution that there should be no resumption of work until last year's (settlement in all grades was guaranteed and a joint board formed of employers and employed, which would recognise the Transport Workers' Federation. Mr. Ben Tillett, speaking at Tower Hill, stated that Australia, New Zealand,- and America were prepared to help the strikers. DRIFTING ALONG. AGITATORS' UTTERANCES. Received 17, 9.40 p.m. London, June 17. | The Swansea dockers have decided to' return to work. Mr. Gosling, speaking in Trafalgar Square, declared that the men could never go back on the old conditions. The suggestion of a national strike had proved a bad card. It was no use pretending that tliey were not hard up. Mr. Keir Hardie, speaking at Forest Dean, said that if the workers in a particular industry desired co-operation with the rest of the workers, they must consult all before' venturing to precipitate a crisis. He was convinced that, legislative • action would produce more permanent results than could be hoped for by strikes. The results gained in good times were liable to be lost in bad times. AUSTRALIAN INTERVENTION. Received 18, 12.50 a.m. Sydney, June 17. Mr. Ben Tillett has cabled to the Wharf Laborers' Union with regard to the transport dispute to block all Lon-don-bound vessels. The Union will consider the question at Wednesday night's I meeting.
