ill'. 11. G. Mitchell lias been appointed to the vacancy on the committee o! tli« New Plymouth Operatic Society. A Press Association message from Greymouth states that Mr. ."Jack" Harris, u well-known pedestrian in the 'seventies, and who held the ten-mile championship of Australasia, died thero on Friday night, after a shoTt illness, aged sixty-eight. At New Plymouth yesterday, his Honor Mr Justice Edwards admitted Mr H. 11. Ilanna as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Oourt, Mr J. 0. Nicholson, of Messrs Roy and Nicholson, as a barrister, and Mr Edwin P. Greatbatch, of Messrs Govett and Quilliam, as a solicitor. Major F. Stuckey, of the King's College Cadets, Auckland, who waa offered the command of the New Zealand Contingent of Senior Cadets, which is to visit Canada, has declined the offer. Major D. Matheson, of the Wellington College, who it- is understood was the next officer to be called upon, ha» also reported its inability to take charge. The conferring of the Imperial Service Order, among the King's Birthday honors, upon Mr. Donald Robertson, Secretary of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Department, and Mr. John Strauehon, Under-Secretary of Landß, is a recognition of long and faithful service .rendered by both officials to the Crown. Mr. Robertson joined the Postal Department as a cadet in Dunedin in 1878, rising by his own diligence and ability to the high position he now occupies. Mr. Strauehon entered the Provincial Engineer's Department in 1862, and three years later joined th» Survey Department, going through the ' various grades until reaching the important office of Under-Secretary. His predecessor, Mr. W. C. Kensington, also earned his 1.5.0.
