Gunn, none for 24. AUSTRALIA v. LANCASHIRE. A WIN FOE LANCASHIRE. London, June 14. When play was resumed it was bright at intervals, the attendance was small and the wicket harder. Macartney and Hazlitt faced Heap and Dean. With seven added,' Hazlitt mishit a skier to mid-off to Sharp, off Dean. Macartney and Emery added 19, and then Macartney, pulling a short ball, was taken finely at mid-on by Dean, off Heap. He had made 80 in 120 minutes. It was a splendid display, and included a sixer and six fours. The remaining three men added 21, of which Whitty made 17 by hard driving. The innings last 180 minutes. Spooner and Makepiece opened to Emery and Hazlitt. Spooner gav' a chance at twelv* of being caught off Emery. He batted forty minutes for 25. Tyldesley was caught right-handed at wide slip cleverly by Kelleway off Whitty. Makepiece batted' soundly. Fifty appeared in 50 minutes. After Tyldesley was out, lunch was taken, and on resuming Whitty and Kelleway did the bowling. Sharp, who came in, was taken at the wickets by Carkeek, who was standing back, off MacLaren. Makepeace, who was in for 120 min-| utea, was leg-before to Matthews. Hei saw 104 runs made. The century occupied 115 minutes.
Lancashire's second innings closed foi 188. E. Tyldesley hit one six and was in 27 minutes. He gave two chances, one in the slips off Matthews and one off MacLaren. A feature of the innings was the partnership between Biooke and Whitehead, who added 63. At the tea adjournment Brooke was 16 and Whitehead 21. By splendid driving eighteen were added off two overs by Matthews, including a sixer. The partnership added 35 in fifteen minutes. On resuming, Kelleway and Matthews were howling, and 28 had been added, when Brookes skied one and was caught by MacLaren. Whitehead made 38 in 35 minutes. He made two bad strokes, and was bowled by Emery after being in 45 minutes. He made a sixer and five fourers. The innings lasted 195 minutes. A shower then delayed play for 25 minutes. Jennings and Kelleway opened for Australia, who wanted 158 to win. Dean and Whitehead bowled in a defective light, and Brookes, standing back from the wickets, caught Jennings off Whitehead. The weather was bright for the resumption of this match, but a high wind was blowing and the wicket,was softish. and soon became difficult. The Austrailians were all disposed of for 133 runs, [Lancashire thus winning the match by 25 runs. The attendance at the opening was small. A feature of the game was the fine bowling of Dean and Heap. The latter took five wickets for 20 runs, [three of which were secured after i luncheon for five runs. Huddleston and Dean resumed the attack. Kelleway, without an addition to his overnight score, was dismissed by a shooter. Dean then got Whitty off'his pads, Bardsley was brilliantly caught low down at mid-on, .and Macartney left to a high right-handed" catch in the slips. It was a difficult catch. He gave a chance when he had scored 29 to J Gunn, off Whitehead. He batted 75 minutes. Matthews was splendidly caught at silly point. The century occupied 125 minutes. At the luncheon adjournment the score stood at six wickets for 117. On resuming the attendance was 3000. Heap and Dean were the bowlers. Gregory, without increasing his score was brilliantly taken by a left-handed catch at short leg. He batted for 90 I minutes, but his display was indifferent. IHe gave a chance when he had scored one, off Huddlestone, and a second at 17 off Heap. Emery was caught at longoff, and MacLaren returned a ball to the bowler.
