AUSTRALIA v. LANCASHIRE. By Oabl«—Press Association—Copyright. London, June 13. The weather was threatening but there was sunshine at intervals for the match between Australia and Lancashire. The attendance was small and the ground softish. Hornby won the toss and sent his team in. Makepeace and Spooner opened to Hazlitt and Matthews. There was. a strong cross wind. Makepeace played Matthews on in the fifth over. J. Tyldesley was disposed of by a good catch in the slips by Hazlitt "off Matthews. He batted thirty minutes. Spooner mad a bad stroke and was caught at the wickets wide on the off side. He made 27 in 70 minutes. He gave a chance at 15 to Whitty at midon off Hazlitt. Fifty appeared in an hour. Sharp was taken at short-leg by Bardsley, who fell. Heap and E. Tyldesley played carefully. The bowling was steady/and the century went up in 115 minutes. At lunch time the score was four wickets for 100 runs. On resuming play only 2000 spectators were present. The small attendance was due to resentment in Manchester at the 'Australians insisting on a shilling gate. MacLaren and Hazlitt were in charge of the bowling. Heap soon played MacLaren on, after having batted for 53 minutes. E. Tyldesley gave a chance at seven at second slip to Kelleway off MacLaren. Hornbv was then bowled by Hazlitt, and E. tyldesley put his leg iii front to Matthews. He had made 13 in 75 minutes. Brooke was missed in the slips before he had scored. This was by Hazlitt off MacLaren. He was also missed at 14 in the slips by Matthews off Kelleway, but in the next over he played Kelleway on. The last three wickets added four runs. The innings lasted 180 minutes. Jennings and Kelleway faced Dean and Whitehead. Jennings made some beautiful off strikes. He was bowled off his pads by Dean by a swerving ball. Macartney was in thirteen minutes without scoring. Fifty went up in 55 minutes. When Bardsley went Macartney had made 30 by good strokes. He gave a chance at 24 to Huddlestone at short-leg off Dean. The century went up in 100 minutes. Matthews was caught left-handed brilliantly at mid-off by Huddlestone. Stumps were then drawn. Macartney was in for 105 minutes and played stylish all-round cricket. He compiled 50 in 70 minutes. It has been arranged that the price of admisgion on Friday and Saturday shall be sixpence after 4 o'clock. The following are the scores : LANCASHIRE.—First Innings.
