TUITION FOR POSTAL MEN
CIVIL SERVICE SUBJECTS. Christchurch, June 10. An explanation of what the Postal Department is ■doing for the postal servants was given l>y Hon. Mr. Ell during the letter-carriers' dinner on Saturday. He said that, with the object of inducing officers to still further increase their efficiency, and 111 order to enable them to pass the tests imposed by the Department and so qualify for promotion, correspondence classes had been held during the past two years for the instruction of officers in the subjects of the Civil Service senior and junior examinations. Tuition under this system was especially suitable for officers whose hours of duty were irregular, since it enabled them to study at their own convenience and relieved them of the necessity to take their lessons at any particular time or place. In the weekly test set by the instructor the amount of matter was limited to the capacity of the average student, and it was found that the answering of questions on paper, by concentrating the attention of the student on certain definite points, induced closer reading, and led to the subject being more thoroughly assimilated. Corrected answer papers, bearing necessary comments or instruction, were relumed to the student, who was at liberty to ask questions without limit. The nominal sum of 10s Od bad been fixed as the fee of each course, and the response made by officers to the opportunities thus provided had been most encouraging.
