Whitty and Kelleway opened the attack. The umpire, Carlin, twice noballed Whitty for slipping over the crease, and he refused to continue, until Gregory gave him the ball. Both bowlers kept a good length. Bates mishit a ball from Kelleway, and Macartney made a clever running catch. Macartney removed Denton's leg stump, and Drake was caught at mid-on. MacartIney displaced Whitty at 13, and Jen- [ nings took Hazlitt's place at 54. Wilson 1 was taken cleverly at slip after 130 minutes' batting. He gave an awkward [chance to Bardsley at 26. Play was slow and the hundred took 135 minutes. ITasker livened things up, making 15 in twelve minutes, including a six and a !four. Booth succumbed second ball. At the tea adjournment the score was six for 120.

On resuming Macartney and Hazlitt were the bowlers. Firth departed in his first over, and Hirst, in attempting a big hit to long-on. He was in for 95 minutes and played a faultless innings, hitting eight fours. White was yorked by Hazlitt. The Australians made a poor start. Drake and Hirst were entrusted with the bowling. At ten 1 Kelleway was caught at short-leg while playing forward. Macartney's leg stump* was removed the second ball he received, and Bardsley, while playing forward to the first ball, was caught smartly low down at short-leg by Denton, leaving the score unaltered.
