MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY OF DAIRY PRODUCE. AT THE DOMINION SHOW. Winter show promoters should take particular stock of the display of dairy produce at the Dominion (Hawera) Show, and the manner of its arrangement. The liberal space allotted to this section, the pillars of butter-boxes, and the free use of ferns and pot plants tend to set off the' display to the best advantage. The magnificent array of trophies for competition in the various classes also excite the envy and admiration of all, and further enhances the friendly rivalry that exists among factory managers throughout the Dominion.
The dairy produce was judged by members of the grading staff working in conjunction. Speaking of the cheese, they stated that the exhibit was unusually large, and one of the finest in the Dominion. The remark was made by one of the judges that the Winter Show proprietary was deserving of the greatest credit for the very effective and attractive manner in which the cheese was staged. The quality of the produce was very fine, in one class especially, where 4Qyo points were awarded for flavor. The body of the cheese in a good many cases was a credit to the makers, and the finish and clean appearance of the cheese were worthy of comment. The butter was stilted by the judges to be of very fine quality, a number of the exhibits making 04 points and over, and giving the judges great difficulty in placing them. The chief defect in the lower grading butters was unevenness in color, some of it being inclined to be streaky. This fault could easily have been remedied by a little more working. The judges were pleased to see that all the butters staged were well above the minimum required for first grade, which spoke well for the makers, it being borne in mind that the butter had been in cool store for a couple of months. Some of it was as fresh to-day as on the day of manufacture.
Competition was very keen in all the cheese and butter sections, and there were numerous ties for second place. In fact, in one instance 110 less than five factories tied with 94 y, points for second. In the cheese sections Ivaupokonui and Kaponga were the most successful, the former winning three classes and the latter's Rowan branch two, Mangarama and Tariki annexed the prizes in the two remaining sections. The points prize in the cheese classes were not available yesterday. Bell Block gained premier honors in two of the butter classes, Levin winning the other two sections. Mr. J. Rutherford (manager of the Bell Block factory) thus wins outright the challenge cup presented by the Camerated Concrete Company, which he has now annexed twice in succession. The results are as follows:
