SENSATIONAL MOTORING

RA«ES IN AMERICA. 500 MILES AT FLYING SPEED. New York, Jun« 5. Remarkable performances have been put up at Indianopolis in a 500-mile motor race. Jos. Dawson, driving one of three national cars entered for the race, succeeded in clipping last year's record by nearly 22 minutes. The event is the American classic race of the year, and is run over a 2 1 / 2 -mile speedway. It led to some sensational performances, especially by Ralph de Palma, who was a strong favorite for the race. He drove a Mercedes car and led for 150 miles, most of the journey being made in better time than world's records. He lost a lot of time iu the last ten miles, owing to the cylinders of his engine acting badly. Finally the engine went dead. De Palma drove a wonderful race, passing the 450-mile mark at more than 80 miles an hour. Dawson receives a prize of 4000 dollars.
