WANGAIfUI MATCHES.

(From our own correspondent.) Sloppy grounds and showery weather affected attendances at Saturday's fixtures, but all were advanced a further stage and games were keen and exciting. On the Rec. the leading Rugby champions, Pirates and Kaierau, put up a great tussle, the skull-and-crossbone brigade holding up the Maori team by 8 to nil. The Northern League match was fast and brilliant. St. John's continued their victorious career by leap-' ing all over Eastern, the score reading* 18 to 8. Both games were more evenly contested than the scores indicate, the. winning teams making more use of their opportunities. Re "Leaguer's" protest (News, 8/6/18) anent unfair comparison of "gates" receipts for Rugby and League matches, Taranaki v. Wanganui.—On Saturday, June 1, heavy rain fell, and it was reported that the League match was postponed till Monday. A Rugby "dodger," distributed early in the afternoon referring to "the great match, Wanganui v. Taranaki"—under what rules was not stated—on the Monday, added weight to the Tumor, and no doubt the attendance at the League match was not improved by that. This scribe's notes were on the train before the rumor was contra- i dieted, and the "unfair comparison" 4 based on his notes was unfortunate and much regretted. The N.U. sports are good fellows, and must pardon this lapse. \ THE NORTHERN LEAGUE TOUR. Auckland, Monday. The following players will represent the New Zealand League for the Australian tour:—Forward, Francis (Auckland), Rukutai (Auckland), H. Hayward (Thames), Evans (Hawkc's Bay), King (Wellington), Irvine (Wellington), Dunning (Auckland), Dervan (Auckland), Brownlee (Thames), M. ITavward (Thames); backs,Hargreave (Auckland), Giltnour (Wellington). Currtan (Auckland), Bradley (Wellington), Kelly (Wellington), Cnrlow (Auckland), Webb (Auckland), Weston (Auckland), Moir (Taranaki), Woodward (Rotorua).
