THE CEMETERY SCANDAL.

To the Editor. Sir, —As the Borough Council intends to consider, I understand, the trouble over the sexton on Monday night, may I he allowed to express the hope that the Council will go into the whole matter of the cemetery scandal. They will do themselves more honor by dealing honorably and justly by all parties concerned. If the sexton has done anything calling for censure let the public' know of it, but if the Council is in the wrong it will be more manly to own up, rather than to shelter themselves behind formalities. It is quite clear that some one has, in defiance of the by-laws, scattered the rubbish over the adjoining ground, and so caused the present trouble. It also looks wrong that the Council should have sold part oi the footpath and allowed a body to be buried therein at the public expense; in fact, out of the rates. I am quite sure I should not be able to obtain such a concession, even if I desired it. What had the party concerned done then that he should be so favored? And why should the sexton be so sTated because be stood by the by-laws, and that in the public interest? No, gentlemen councillors. you will rise in the public estimate much more by retracing your steps than by smothering up the mess into which you have tumbled, and trying to make your employee your scapegoat. Fellow citizens, I hope you will let it be known that you will not be a silent party to a wrong, but endeavor to inspire your members of the Council with a little moral courage to do the right. Where is the much advertised "Brotherhood ?" Why not make yourselves heard for "the cause that lacks assistance 1" Roll up to-morrow night and show your sympathy by your presence at the Council Chamber. I am, etc., VOX POPULL New Plymouth, June 9.
