THE CEMETERY SCANDAL.
To the Editor. Sir.—By your morning issue I note that the above matter is to be dealt with at the next borough council meeting. May I ask, Sir, whether the ratepayers are not entitled to be present at these meetings? Quite apart from any personal feelings we are entitled to see fair play to every man in our employ as citizens, to say nothing of protecting our public reserves from mutilation, and our revenue from being misused by granting free disinterments, etc. In the sexton's case there is one plain fact we are entitled to know about, namely, "That while his letter of dismissal plainly states it was for returning the rubbish to its original place (after it had been illegally deposited elsewhere), the fact is clear that he was actually condemned by other matter intended to prejudice him to the council. At least one councillor refused to believe afterwards that he had been dismissed on so slight a pretext. If the council are not afraid of full enquiry, and do not take refuge by flying into committee', they may rely on a large audience of fairminded ratepayers who are out for a clean straight run. Will you kindly make it clear, Mr Editor, whether ratepayers may attend the council meeting, whether they must withdraw should the council go into committee, and also just when the next council meeting takes place? We all want to be there!.—l am, etc., CITIZEN. [The council meet on Monday evening; their deliberations are open to burgesses; if the council go into committee burgesses must withdraw.—Ed.]
