DISTRICT NEWS.

(Fr<m Our Own Correapondnts). TATARAiMAKA. Members of the Tataraimaka Hockey Club turned out in good strength on Saturday, when a match, Bush v. Beach, was playe<l, resulting in a win for the latter by 4 goals to 3. For the Bush | Angus shot three goals, and for the | Beach R. Hawkins, Watson, P. Hawkins and McKay shot one each, R. Angus at half is showing good form this year, and Shaw, at right inner, plays with great determination. J. Watson is "out on his own," and will strengthen the team considerably. Hawkins Bros, and Gyde, in the backs, make good "stone walls," and should also render valuable assistance to the club. One cannot help being struck with the tidy appearance of the local school grounds and the improvements recently effected upon the little plot by the teachers and committee. The tenuis dance, held in the Hempton Hall, Okato, on Monday, was a decided success, the ball being taxed to the utmost. Music was supplied by Miss Andrews, Mr. J. Power acting at M.C.

TOXGAPORUTU. The earthquake experienced here on Sunday, May 26, doubt shaken things up. My reasons for saying this is because the s.s. Pitoitoi and the oil launch Te Kawau arrived here on Wednesday, May 29, f- : loaded with the necessary material; r our factory. Both vessels returned to Waitara the same evening and loaded up again on Thursday, 30th, and again entered our harbor early on Friday morning. After the 'Pitoitoi was unloaded she again sailed for Waitara, to load up for Marakopa, but the launch remained" for the purpose of carrying the material by water to as near the site of the factory as possible, the cement, bricks and the necessary timber for the boxing, so that the foundations of the building could be proceeded with. The first trip up was made on Saturday, 31st, and no snags were touched. The second trip was run on Monday, June 3, with the same success, so it is now possible to deliver goods along the river from the bridge for some six miles, and if a small sum were voted'by the Government to do a little snagging, the roads en route would not be so bad as at present. The cost per ton by water for goods delivered \rould be only half that whish we have had to pay during the past 16 years. I cannot understand why every settler round here is not on his mettle. Such a river at their doors is worth £IOO a year. Wake up, and get on the powers that be, and get this splendid means of transit in a safer condition! Bulloak drays are not allowed on the roads at this season of the year, and as horse teams are scarce, Messrs Hardwick and Danks, the contractors for the erection of the factory, are anxious about getting the 15,000 ft of timber, corrugated iron and other material from the wharf to the site of the factory. The roads are worse now than they have been for the last eight years, but if the worst comes I suppose the timber will have to be rafted. I hope the contractors will not have to go to this expense, and the loss of time they are experiencing through the bad weather is not all to their advantage. The Pitoitoi is expected here with the machinery for the factory (22 tons) on or about the 12th inst. There is no appearance to date of the stove or radiator to warm the schooL The little folks must feel the cold, as the school is not lined and is Yery draughty. I hope this winter will not be allowed to pass with something being done for the children's comfort. A mob of 1600 fat wethers passed through here on Tuesday on their way to the Waitara freezing works.
