GOLF.
ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. London, June 6. Mr, C. B. Macfarlane beat the Hon. Michael 'Scott in the sixth round of the golf championship, by two up and one to play.
THE CORONATION MEDAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The golf Coronation medal match, which is played on the home greens and ig open for competition by 25 clubs in the Dominion, has been won by Mrs. O'Callaghan (Timaru), Miss Wood ; (Christchurch) being second, and Mrs. Bruce (Timaru) third. The weather conditions were very bad, especially in the middle districts of the Dominion. The majority of the clubs played in rain, and in many cases the courses were exceptionally heavy. This is the first time the home links medal goes to a South Island club. Previous winners were New \ Plymouth, Otaki, and Hutt.
[ " _ NOTES. | • NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. Mixed foursomes have been arranged | for to-day, and the entries received conI stitute a record for the club, no fewer | than 56 players taking part in the match. Owing to the shortness of the day/ only 16 holes will be played, the "Swamp" being omitted in each round. In order that each player shall drive j at all of the eight holes in the round, it has been arranged that the men shall drive off at the first tee on the first round and the ladies on the second round. The ladies will thus drive at two holes in succession, namely, the last on the first round and the first on the second round. The local golfers were most fortunate in having a comparatively fine day on the Birthday for their match against Hawera, as the days immediately before and after were anything but suitable for satisfactory play. The result of the match showed that the visitors were quite outclassed, as out of the twenty-four matches played they were able to secure only two wins. It ig, however, only fair to the Hawera Club to state that several of its strongest players were unable to accompany the team, and that several of the matches were lost by very small margins. It is proposed to set aside June 3 as the day for an annual match between the Hawera and New Plymouth clubs, and it is to be hoped that the local players will be able to muster a good strong team for their match next year. As all the regular club competitions are held on Saturdays, and as the number of Thursday players is rapidly increasing, Mr. Medley has generously donated a cup for competition among the Thursday players. The conditions of play will be made known, and it is hoped that the first match will be arranged for next Thursday. Some little time ago reference was made in these notes to slow players, but it was not intended, as seems to be the impression in certain quarters, that such remarks should apply to beginners only. Nearly every new player .must necessarily take longer over his round that an experienced one, and the better players are prepared to make allowances accordingly. What was aimed at was that all players should walk as quickly as possible between their strokes and so give those who are the last to leave the tee as much chance as possible of completing their round before dark. When players find that they are losing ground on those in front and are being pressed by those following behind, it is their duty to allow the quicker players to pass.
