The South Africans have played nine matches to date, and of these four have been won, two lost and three drawn. A comparison of the Australians and South Africans is interesting. In the nine matches each' has met the same Jive teams. South Africa had the worst of the deal in the drawn matches against Yorkshire and Oxford, but should have beaten Northants by ten wickets. Australia, on the other hand, had the better of the position in the abandoned match against the champion county, Warwickshire, and the match against Middlesex was, of course, abandoned almost before it started. Australia has scored 3219 for the loss of 94 wickets, an average of 34.2 per wicket, and 3170 has been scored against them at a cost of 156 wickets, an average of .20.3. The South Africans have lost 136 wickets in scoring 3217, an average of 23.6 per wicket, whilst they have captured 156 of their opponents' wickets for 3289 runs, an average of 21. The Australians have scored eight centuries to one by their opponents, and the South Africans have scored three centuries against four by -their opponents. The Australians also head both the batting and bowling averages. Macartney, with an aggregate of 824 and an average of 74.0, heads the batting, with Bardsley, 647 and 71.9, coming second. Then cornea Nourse, with 512 and 39.5, just beating Gregory, 894 arid 3.11.4. Matthews, Kelleway and Jennings are all ahead of Snooke, who is the second South African in batting. In bowling. Macartney heads the list with twelve wickets at a cost of 7.9. Kelleway, with 25 for 37.7, or an average cost of 15, just beats Pegler, whose average is 15.4, but who has the greatest bag. The bowling averages are made up to the end of last week. The second ,test match will commence on Monday, when Englatd and South Africa will meet. The English team, as chosen, is a very solid combination, and should succeed in beating the Soutn Af- ' of ~tKe~ team" tliaC lifted" t"he"ashes from larl^^destrucßMSWfff9Sht trip. Warner, j H?®Bsf : Rhod^i.sS3fi ; li aid Woolley make up iJiV; find C. B. Fry, Jessop, Spooner.andßrearley complete the combination. Matthews' feat in performing the hat trick in each innings in the South A/rican match is unequalled in the annals of test crieket. It is the more remarkable, inasmuch as those were the only three wickets he scored in each innings. Bowlers are having a glorious time on English wickets just row, and the county matches are provii' some sensational figures in the trui; lling line.
