June 6. f Kitty Melrose, the Adelphi actress, committed suicide in consequence of a love affair with E. Lawson Johnson, of Addington Manor, Bucks. A pathetic correspondence read at the inquest revealed the fact that the Johnson family objected to the marriage. MUNIFICENT BEQUESTS. London, June 6. Sir Julius Wernher left an estate of five millions. He bequeathes £250,000 for building a university at Groot's Schuur; £ 100,000 to the College of Science and Technology at South Kensington, and £IBO.OOO to charities and education. FIRE IN CANADA. ■ Ottawa, June 6. The mining town of Cobal, near Montreal, was swept by fire, the theatre, bank, hotel, and entire business block being destroyed. A lamp exploded in the actors' dressing-room and started the conflagration. Several persons were injured. < CANADIAN TRADE. Ottawa, June 6. The Trade and Commerce Department is opening negotiations with the Imperial Government with the object of securing the co-operation of the British consular service to expand Canadian trade. Mr. G. Foster, Minister of Commerce, who! is a member of the Imperial Trade Commission, will take up the question during his visit to England. SOUTH WALES FEDERATION. London, June 6. The income of the South Wales Miners' Federation in 1911 was £312,491, of which £213,687 was expended on strikes and lockouts.
