Stratford News

iTom our Resident Reporter. AN ESTEEMED OFFICIAL Some very nice tilings were said at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning concerning Mr. Frank Bird, the clerk of the court, who is exchanging with Mr. H. J. Reeve, at Whangarei, and leaves here on Monday. The complimentary and commendatory remarks of the magistrate and bar were cordial and sincere, and they were well deserved. Mr. Kenrick, SjM., was in a particularly good position to refer to Mr. Bird's work, for, as is said, he had known him as a junior on the West Coast, and had seen him rise to his present responsible position in the service. Of him he said that he had always been a conscientious worker, who was at the same time, courteous to the bench, the court officials, the legal profession, and to everyone else, whilst he had a very sympathetic manner for the old age pensioners. "I think the bar will agree with me," said His Worship, ''when I say that the work could not be better done, and that we will never get another man his equal." Mr. Kenrick concluded by remarking that Mr. Bird was not going to run in single harness in his new appointment, a remark which made the subject of his remarks still more uneasy, for Mr. Bird is above all things unassuming. Mr. T. C. Fookes, on behalf of the legal profession, also paid a tribue to Mr. Bird's work, and to his courtesy, stating that his duties had been carried out in a way that reflected the greatest credit upon him. He wished Mr. Bird and his future wife every happiness and pros- j perity. Mr. Bird briefly thanked His J Worship and the bar for their eulogy I and good wishes.
