THE DREDGE MANCHESTER
A CLUE FROM THE DEEP. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A discovery has been made on the west coast which may throw some light on the disappearance of the Sydney Harbor Trust's suction dredge Manchester, which left Wellington for Sydney on April 6, and which has not been heard of since. On Wednesday afternoon, while walking on the beach at Pollock, between Manukau and Waikato heads, Mr. Meikle discovered a life buoy bearing the words "S.D. Manchester, Lyttelton." The lifebuoy did not appear to have been in the water long, and the paint on it was comparatively fresh. There were no further signs of any wreckage in the vicinity. The mere fact of the lifebuoy having been found on the west coast does not necessarily imply that the Manchester was at any time in the near vicinity, as there appears to be a very curious current which brings portions of wreckage from thousands of miles away. In this connection it is interesting to note that some time back a lifebuoy was 'found bearing indistinct lettering which led to the belief that it had belonged to the ill-fated Waratah, which" is supposed to have been lost off the east coast of Africa.
