GERMAN NEW GUINEA
AN INTERESTING EXPEDITION. Bj Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 7, 12.20 a.m. Brisbane, June ti. The steamer Siar, from German New Guinea, brings interesting details of the exploration of the river Kaiserin Augusta. A large party under Dr. Stoele has been searching for gold and other minerals and studying the habits and customs of the natives. The Siar travelled 240 miles up the river without once touching the bottom. At the narrowest point it is 400 metres wide, and at the widest 2000 metres across. Many remarkable features abound, including all sorts of birds and huge alligators. The party had spent three months, and expect to spend twelve months exploring. They built fortifications and camps for protection against the natives, who are described as being of fine physique but hostile. They made several attacks on the outposts, resulting in a number of ( the attackers being killed.
