DISTRICT NEWS.

WAITARA ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At the last euchre party 'held in th* Huirangi hall eleven tables were occupied. Miss V. Turnbull won the Indies prize (a glass jir:), n'vl Mr Andrew Turnbull won the men's (a card box.) After supper the usual dance was held. Last Tuesday a basket social was held in the hall at Huirangi in aid of ths piano fund. There was a large attendance, and the following contributed to the programme:—Pianoforte duet, Mrs McNeice and Mrs Russell; song, Mm Roberts; song, "Nobody Else" Mrs Hoby; comic song "Conversazione," Ml Walter Matthews; song "Molly," Mr. W. J. Smith; song, Misa Badley; song "Simon the Cellarer," Mr Brown; song, Mrs Roberts; song "I'm Going to Marry Jim* Mr R. Giddy; pianoforte duet, Mr* Hoby and Miss Yeates.

After the concert Mr Walter Matthews, of Inglewood, conducted the sale of baskets, and put under the hammer aom* twenty odd, most of them being nicely decorated, and fetched good price*, th* highest realising ten shillings. Mi Matthews must be complimented m such a successful .sale, bidding being brisk throughout. Mr J. H. Smith tkanked all who had assisted to make ths evening such a success, after which supper was handed round. After the floor was cleared, dancing \v;n indulged in till about 2 a.m. Mr. Sid Sarten acted as M.C., and the music was supplied by the Bachelors' orchestra, from Waitara, which was of their usual higk order, and much appreciated by dancers. At the conclusion the orchestra was voted "a hearty vote of thanks.

I Mr H. Purdie has just purchased several pedigree Jersey cows from noted Auckland breeders, and with others purchased he should establish & good pedigree herd. I wish him every success. | Mr. Purdie recently sold his homef stead farm at £3O an acre to Mr Hill. I Miss Mead, new teacher for Huirangi, | arrived on Saturday. I Huirangi householders are to havs I another chance to elect a committee o* I June 24. It is to be hoped that parents will turn out and form a committee, j and not rely on commissioners, as ia the past. On June 28 the Church of England wiH give a concert in the Huirangi hall ia aid of the church funds. 'A good programme is being prepared, and a large gathering is anticipated. Local people are advised not to forget the winter show this week, June 5, 0, 1 and 8.
