SIR JOSEPH WARD
♦■~- THE MONEY MARKET. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. There was a very big gathering in the Town Hall to-night, when Sir Joseph and Lady Ward were the guests of the citizens of Wellington. The Mayor, Mr. D. McLaren, presided. Among those on the platform were Sir John Findlay, Sir James Carroll. ITons. J. A. llnnan. J |Colvin and Dr. Te Rangihiroa. Th» I Prime Minister and all the other Ministers who are absent from Wellington sent apologies and good wishes. Mr. TT. C. Tewsley, chairman of flip committee which organised the gathering, presented Sir Joseph Ward with an illuminated address, expressing appreciation of the lit Prime Minister's public services and of his merits as a citizen. Lady Ward was presented with a Bijou grand piano. After Mr. Tcw«!p- had spoken. Sir J. Carroll and Mr. fl'inan spoke in terms of praise regarding the character of their late political chief. S'- Josruh Ward had a magnificent reception. He said that he would not at the present stage deal with the political situation in New Zealand. He would, however, take an early opportunity of setting his views and his plans for the future before the public Referring to the last elections iie svd that at that time he was negotiatiii" for loans amounting to four million' pounds, When he saw the '••>- suits of the first ballots he hung of tl<money market, and after the second ballots he decided not to go on with the loans. Had those transactions been carried out the present tightness in the local monev market would not have been experienced.
